Final Lancer Day Plans

Well, now that all of our retirement accounts are in the dumper, what better way to lift our spirits than a Parade! And we're in luck because as you know the SME 50th Anniversary Celebration, The Lancer Day Parade and the first and only All '70s TGIF Party is this Friday. And although the weather today looks a bit like the recent events on Wall Street, we have devised a can't miss bail out plan that includes only a minor adjustment of the original plans. The most important thing and the good news is that it is supposed to be a perfect day on Friday. Brian Busby just said it will be sunny and 68 degrees. The bad news is that it will be raining Tuesday evening so we are canceling Tuesday night's construction/build meeting and deferring our final Float work until Thursday. But not to worry, on Thursday we will start an hour earlier and get it all done then. So here is the schedule for Thursday & Friday:

Thursday, 10/16 @ 5:00pm - Final Float Construction & Champagne Christening @ 8825 Mission Road - BYOB

Friday, 10/17

  • If you are riding or walking in the Parade, meet at the Prairie Village Pool Parking lot off Delmar promptly at 1:20pm
  • Parade begins at SM East and proceeds down Mission Road to The Village at 2:00pm
  • All School Rally in front of Euston Hardware/Mr. Goodcents at 2:30
  • All '70s TGIF Post Parade Party at The Blue Moose 3:00 - 6:00 with Shag Mahoney playing songs from the '70s on our Float in the parking lot
Come for any or all that you can and please register your vote to attend The Blue Moose Event in the sidebar to this posting.

We'll see you in the Village on Friday where as Dave Bonebrake, '72 noted that "this is the biggest thing to hit the Prairie Village Shopping Center since the Toon Shop had 45's on sale for 49 cents!!"

And more great news!! A.B. May is sponsoring the cost of our All '70s TGIF Post Parade Party Band!
Thanks to our Seventies classmates the Posladek's for their generosity!

And remember to "Call your serviceman from A.B. May!"

O'Neill Honda To Be Presenting Sponsor

Great News!! We have found a Presenting Sponsor for our Float right in the proverbial SM East back yard! O'Neill Honda and O'Neill Nissan at 80th & Metcalf today agreed to underwrite our entry in The Lancer Day Parade. You can visit them online at http://www.oneillhonda.com/
A very special thanks to Rick O'Neill and his entire organization for their generosity and support!!

Post Parade Party Update

Our co-chairs for the All '70's Post Parade Celebration at the Blue Moose, Deb Niewald, '75 and Alice Robinson Levy, '71, need to give the Blue Moose a general idea of how many people will be attending so they can plan accordingly. The Blue Moose is making their entire bar & patio available to us. In addition, they also are going to section off as much of the parking lot as needed to accomodate us. Our Float will be in the parking lot just outside the Moose with a 70's band playing on top. There is no charge to attend and we are not asking for reservations, but please vote in the Poll in the sidebar to the right of this posting so we will have the space we need! We all hope that you will vote yes!!

My name is Jeff Wright, and I approved this message.

Event Update

We had a great meeting on Tuesday night and a great time........... thanks to all who participated and offered suggestions and input. Also, thanks to Minksy's whose manager is also an SM East graduate ('97) as well as The Blue Moose manager (SME '95). There was an exceptional turnout from the Classes of '72, '74 and '75. We're really hoping for many more to hop on the Bandwagon (I mean the Float) as we get closer to October 17th...........so spread the word and grab your classmates!

Deb Niewald '75 and Alice Robinson Levy '71 volunteered to co-chair our All '70's TGIF immediately following the Parade at The Blue Moose and have the plans rolling on that. Final information will be forthcoming.

Dates of Note:

  • Saturday, 10/4 @ 9:00am Float Rough/Frame In Day
  • Tuesday, 10/14 @ 6:00pm Major Construction Night
  • Thursday, 10/16 @ 6:00pm Final Float Top Off & Champagne Christening
All of the above events @ Jeff Wright's Home '72, 8825 Mission Road - BYOB - If you can also bring a hammer, circular saw, extention cord, tape measure, utility knife , especially a drill (screwdriver) or staple gun......maybe some '70's CDs. If you can't, come anyway. All of the materials for the float arrived from California via UPS yesterday, so that's all set.

We know not everyone is available to participate in the Parade and the festivities on October 17th, but hope that the other events will offer an opportunity for you to join us any time that your schedule will allow...........so please come when you can!

With the 50th Anniversary, this is a one time and out series of events, so don't miss it. We know we will all have opportunities with our future class reunions, but we've put ten classes together from our decade and have really expanded the fun! So we'll see you there!!

Lastly, we have sponsorship opportunities for those businesses and/or individuals that would like to help underwrite our costs and possibly donate the excess to the School. This is entirely voluntary and we are not expecting anything from you but your time and participation. If you would like more information about this please contact me or your class contact.

P.S. There's also a rumor "floating" around that if this turns out as good as we think it will, that we'll take the float on the road for the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena. We're checking that out and will get back to you later in a future posting.
